Abstract     The paper deals with the current status of regenerative periodontal treatment. Techniques used to achieve new attachment are listed, and the evolution of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) methods, based on biological principles, is described. The regenerative potential of different periodontal structures is presented. Root surface colonization with active periodontal ligament cells is essential for obtaining new connective tissue attachment. Thanks to advances in surgical technique and membrane technology, GTR treatment underwent remarkable evolution over the past ten years. Numerous clinical studies and animal experiments published to date have contributed to make the concept of GTR a clinical reality.
