Abstract     Radiography may be used to assess the cumulative effect of a lifetime experience of periodontitis on marginal bone. In order to quantify alveolar bone loss, panoramic radiographs from 375 patients (159 males, 216 females) aged 18-60 years were evaluated at the Department of Stomatology in Ljubljana. Radiographic images were displayed on a computer monitor. With the aid of a graphic pad the following anatomical landmarks were entered into the computer: crown tip, root apex and alveolar bone margin on the mesial and distal sides of all teeth except third molars. A total of 9025 teeth were examined, and the height of alveolar bone was expressed as a percentage of tooth length. Twenty subjects aged 18-20 years with clinically healthy periodontal tissue served as a control group. The average alveolar bone height in the control group was 62 per cent. Compared to this value, alveolar bone loss in the observed population varied from 0 to 30 per cent. Computer assisted analysis of bone destruction is a useful method for alveolar bone loss screening in large epidemiological surveys.
