Abstract | Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a fairly new diagnostic modality in medicine and dentistry. Instead of ionizing radiation, it uses harmless radio waves. Being non-invasive and safe, the investigation can be repeated as often as necessary without harm to the patient. The most important feature of the method is its ability to differentiate between various soft tissues of similar density. The aim of this study was to apply the MRI technique to the diagnosis of periodontal tissue inflammation. Gadolinium-DTPA, a paramagnetic agent that accumulates in inflamed tissues, was used to enhance the contrast between inflamed and uninflamed areas. MR images cf gingiva, periodontal ligament and other soft tissues in the oral cavity were compared with radiographs. The study showed that MRI is superior to radiography because it provides more information on processes within the soft periodontal tissues. | |
