Abstract     The aim of this study has been to determine the optimal Er:YAG laser beam parameters that provide maximal ablation efficacy associated with minimal thermal side effects. The influence of irradiation was studied in enamel, dentine and cementum following the application of variable pulse energy, number of consecutive pulses and laser pulse duration. The results show that crater depth increases with increasing laser pulse energy up to a level of 250mJ/pulse, where maximal depth is achieved. Optimal pulse duration is about 200ws. The influence of water cooling on ablation efficacy was also studied. The results show that water cooling decreases thermal side effects but has almost no influence on laser beam efficacy.
