Abstract     Background: Unilateral functional crossbite (UFCB) is often associated with functional asymmetry and, if not treated properly, can lead to severe skeletal facial asymmetry. The aim of the present study was to assess the degree of facial asymmetry in children with UFCB in the early and late mixed dentition phases and compare them to a group of non-crossbite subjects. Subjects and methods: The study included 156 Caucasian subjects aged 5.8 to 11.9 years. Fifty-two children with 'UFCB (26 females and 26 males) formed the study group, and 104 noncrossbite children (48 females and 56 males) served as the control group. Facial asymmetry was evaluated on three-dimensional laser scans of the subjects' faces. Results: The UFCB subjects had significantly greater (P<0.05) asymmetry of the whole face as well as of the lower and middle parts of the face in both the early and late mixed dentition phases, as compared to the subjects of the control group. The greatest differences were seen for the lower part of the face. Conclusions: Children with unilateral functional crossbite in the early and late mixed dentition phases exhibit more facial asymmetry than children without this malocclusion. The asymmetry is most pronounced in the lower part of the face and least pronounced in the upper part of the face.
