Abstract     Our retrospective study included 25 patients with angiomyolipoma. None of them had any signs or symptoms indicating tuberous sclerosis. Serious clinical complications were documented in 6 patients: massive haemorrhage (2/25), hydronephrosis due to the compression of the ureter (1/25) or pyelon (1/25), and association with other tumours - renal cell carcinoma (1/25) and adenoma of the adrenal gland (1/25). All tumours consisted of mature adipose tissue, smooth muscle cells and blood vessels with thickened walls, which had no elastic lamina. Immunohistochemically, the smooth muscle cells stained strongly with antibodies against vimentin, desmin and actin, as well as with anti-NKI/C3 and HMB4S antibodies. Twenty three patients were treated surgically: nephrectomy and tumour enucleation were performed in 14 and 9 patients, respectively.
