Abstract     Background: Nasal asymmetry in unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients ispresent already at birth and remains noticeable in adulthood due to differences in theshape and position of the alar cartilages. It can be corrected with openrhinoseptoplasty after the completion of growth. We evaluated the outcome of thisprocedure. Methods: Nasal symmetry was assessed on pre- and postoperativefrontal photographs of 33 adults with complete UCLP. The assessments were doneby eight evaluators using a three-point scale. The values for each subject wereaveraged. The Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, and interclass correlation coefficient testswere used for statistical analysis. Results: Before rhinoseptoplasty, 12 subjects hadpoor, 19 good, and two excellent nasal symmetry. After the surgery, three subjectshad poor, 21 good, and nine excellent nasal symmetry. The difference was statisticallysignificant (V=458, p<0.001). Agreement among evaluators was high and statisticallysignificant both before (ICC=0.925; p<0.001) and after the procedure (ICC=0.949;p<0.001). Conclusion: Open rhinoseptoplasty is effective in improving nasalsymmetry in adults with UCLP.
