Abstract		Hertwig's epithelial root sheath plays a central role in the development of the rootand, to a large extent, of the tooth-supporting apparatus. It is involved in theformation of dentine on one side and cementum on the other. At the same time it determines the size, shape and number of roots. Root formation is accompanied by the development of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. The penultimate process is closing of the periodontal space with gingival attachment. Tooth eruption,functional loading, and formation of the apex represent important final milestones in the development of the root and the tooth.
