Abstract     Benzodiazepines are the most common group of drugs used in deliberate self-poisoning in Slovenia. The most frequently benzodiazepine poisoning include alprazolam, diazepam, bromazepam, lorazepam and flurazepam. Patients with a mild benzodiazepine overdose display drowsiness, dysarthria and ataxia. In large doses, benzodiazepine can cause coma and respiratory depression, and death. Flumazenil, which is a competitive antagonist of GABA receptors, can help to confirm a suspected diagnosis of benzodiazepine overdose in unconsciousness poisoned patients. The management of acute benzodiazepine poisoning is mainly supportive. In addition, flumazenil and activated charcoal could be used.
