Abstract     The prevalence of the Helicobacter pylori infection is about 50 to 60 percent among the population at the age of 70 in the developed countries, about 90 percent in the undeveloped countries, and about 70 percent in Slovenia. These figures exceed by far the number of patients with ulcer disease. From the pathogenetic point of view the following bacterium-related factors play an important role: the flexibility and adhesion, urease, deaminase, and other enzymes and cytotoxins. Helicobacter pylori is the most important causative agent in the development of the duodenal and gastric ulcer. The Helicobacter pylori infection may substantially increase the risk of gastric carcinoma and MALT lymphoma. The diagnostic methods for the detection of the infection include the histological examination, culture, rapid urease test, serology and the respiratory test. The infection should be treated in all patients with ulcer and confirmed diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection. As a treatment method the double therapy with omeprazole and amoxicillin is gaining recognition.
