Abstract | | Duodenal and gastric ulcer are diseases which can be reliably diagnosed by endoscopic examination. The same diagnostic procedure is required for the detection of Helicobacter pylori and exclusion of malignancy in gastric ulcer. Drugs for the treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcer include antacids, H2-receptor inhibitors, proton pump inhibitors, and sucralfate. It is easier to achieve healing of the ulcer than to prevent its recurrences. Successful prevention of recurrent ulcer is provided by maintenance therapy with sucralfate H2-receptor inhibitors or eradication of Helicobacter pylori.
