Abstract     This paper considers the application of multiple intelligences in patient education, using an interrelated model. Patients% understanding of the health care knowledge they receive in hospital, pre-discharge, requires advances in relation to how this information is conveyed and the practitioners understanding of how, in turn, the patient internalises their discharge plan. The fundamental question is % how are patients effectively engaged in the health learning encounter, so that it is reinforced beyond the caring experience in hospital? In this regard, the work of Gardner on multiple intelligences (MI) and Shearer on how to assess MI has applicability and utility in health care education. Gardner%s contends that each individual differs in intellectual abilities, so complex that they cannot be represented by a single intelligence. Gardner theorises that the brain functions using eight intelligences, which can be employed to improve learning at an individual level. Facilitating learning for understanding (lft), therefore, should be individualised in order to enable patients to use their range of intellectual strengths and abilities, as a means of understanding the complex nature of health care information and its application in relation to a full or partial recovery and or restoration of normal bodily functioning.
