Abstract     Background: The aim of our retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcome of conservative treatment of mandibular condyle fractures sustained during child hood. Methods: Invitations for a follow-up examination were se nt to 49 consecutive patients who underwent non-surgical treatment of unilateral or bilateral mandibular condyle fractures at the Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery, University Medical Centre Ljubljana between the years 1980 and 2009. All the patients were under 12 years of age at the time of injury. Twenty-three patients (47%) responded to our invitation. The follow-up examination comprised evaluation of the occlusion status, condition and movement of the temporomandibular joint, and facial asymmetry. Panoramic radiographs were obtained, and the symmetry of the condyles was compared. Results: The average time from injury to follow-up was 13.7 years (3 to 26 years). Occlusion of the teeth and jaw movement were good in all the patients. Facial asymmetry was seen in only 12% (2/17) of patients with unilateral fracture, and in none of those with bilateral fracture. Radiographs revealed incomplete remodelling of the condyle in 59% (10/17) of patients with unilateral fracture, and in none of those with bilateral fracture. Conclusions: Conservative treatment of unilateral and bilateral mandibular condyle fractures in children gives good functional and cosmetic results. Radiographic aberrations in the affected condyle are more pronounced after unilateral fractures.
