Abstract | The combination of low-light level video cameras with digital computerbased image analysis is enabling scientists to use a variety of faint fluorescent probes for study of biological activity in living cells. We have employed these techniques to study the intracellular concentration of ions including calcium and protons whilst manipulating cytosolic-based signalling pathways. Similar technology also allows us to visualise recently-released prolaction on the cell surface, using a fluorescein-conjugated prolactin antibody. This article describes some of the approaches which make possible these studies, and their application in practice to the study of secretory cells. | |
