Abstract     Degradation of the endomembrane system, after cessation of stimulated yolk protein synthesis, was studied on hepatocytes of zebra-fish (Brachydanio rerio). Because of the short life-time of the autophagic vacuoles (AV), which are involved in degradation of cell constituents, chloroquine was applied. By preventing the activity of lysosomal hydrolytic enzymes, this drug prolongs the life-time of AV and so increases their number. It was found that the number of AV can be correlated with the quantity and the cisternal organization of the endomembrane system in fish hepatocytes.
