Abstract     In the period from December 1991 to April 1992, 207 staphylococcal strains (154 Staphylococcus aureus and 53 Staphylococcus epidermidis) were tested to evaluate three different methods for diagnosing methicillin resistance (microdilution broth susceptibility test, disc diffusion susceptibility test and methicillin screening test). Using the microdilution broth susceptibility method, 43 percent methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and 49 percent methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis were obtained. The results given by the disc diffusion method and the methicillin screening test did not deviate significantly from the results given by the microdilution broth susceptibility test.
