Abstract     Hypertension in pregnancy with its complications remains one of the main causes of perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. The etiopathogenesis of the disease is not known yet, and this is the reason why many nomenclatures are cited with plea for standardisation so that results in different centers could be compared. A possible mechanism of the disease, beginning with endothelial damage and leading to an imbalance between thromboxane and prostacyclin, is described along with the presently used drugs which prevent aggregation of platelets. Haemodynamic changes are mentioned and so is the rational pharmacotherapy in gestational proteinuric hypertension. Methods for screening are briefly presented. There is much scientific work to be done for the final elucidation of the problem.
