Abstract     The influence of phosphate binders including aluminium (Al) on serum Al levels is very important in chronic dyalisis patients (CDP). A comparative study of three phosphate binders was made in 12 stable CDP (6 men and 6 women), average age 53 years who had been a mean of 58 months on a chronic kidney replacement program with an average of 13 hours on dialysis weekly. The study was divided into five periods, each lasting 14 days. During period A Sucralftate, during period B calcium carbonate, during period C aluminium hydroxide, during period D the combination of CaCo3 with Al(OH)3 and during period E the combination of CaCO3 with Sucralftate were administred. At the end of each period blood samples were taken on an empty stomach before dialysis. Serum Al at the end of period A was significantly higher than in periods B, C, D and E (p less th. 0.01, Student's test for paired data). Thus Sucralftate had the greatest influence on serum Al in CDP. Hyperaluminiemia decreased when CaCO3 was used.
