Abstract | A microscopic model of the ferroelectric smectic C phase which takes into account both the small polar as well as the large quadropolar ordering of the transverse molecular dipoles is shown to describe quantitatively the observed anomalous temperature dependence of the pich of the smectic C helix. The model is supported by the results of 14N nuclear quadropole as well as 13C NMR studies. | |
