Abstract     Normally small quantities of direct reacting bilirubin (DB) could be detected in blood of hyperbilirubinemic newborns. With the measurment of erithrocyte bound indirect, unconjugated bilirubin (Bu) we have measured also DB in erithrocyte fraction of blood in 73 term consecutively admitted hyperbilirubinemic newborns. In serum average total bilirubin (TB): 234.9+-66.3 (80.2-390.0), Bu: 215+-64.3 (68.6-363.3), DB: 19.9+-5.8 (6.2-32.1) mikromol/L. Average TB in erithrocyte fraction of blood: 21.6+-6.3 (8.0-36.0), Bu: 9.1+-4.3 (2.5-20.0) and DB: 12.5+-4.6 (2.5-22.5) mikromol/L. In the fraction of erithrocyte bound DB could among other bilirubin mono and diglucoronides also be delta bilirubin.
