Abstract     From June 1983 to June 1988 454 peritoneal catheters were implanted to 37 patients with terminal failure: 36 Tenckhoff catheters with two cuffs (TC2C), one Tenckhoff catheter with one cuff (TC1C), four Toronto-Western-Hospital catheter (TWHC), three Goretex catheters (GC) and one silicone catheter (SC). They were implanted with straight medial cut with subcutaneous tunnel, only GC catheters were implanted with a direct surgical technique. Overall catheter survival was 495 months: 384 months for TC2c, 51 for TC1c, 56 for TWHC, 33 for GC and four months for SC. We have observed 19 cases of exit site infections at TC2C, one at TC1C, one at THWC and five at GC. The tunnel tract infection was registered in two cases at TC2C, a dislocation in two cases of TC2C, an outflow obstruction in four cases of TC2C and in one case of THWC. Catheter loss was due to reccurent peritonitis (14), drainage obstruction (2), technical impairments (3), avlusion (1), sepsis (1), abdominal hernia (1) and exitus (5). The relationship between early and late disfunction was 1 to 1.6
