Abstract     Footballer's ankle or the anterior impingement syndrome is a degenerative lesion marked by osteophyte formation at the front of the ankle after repetitive direct or indirect trauma. Bearing surfaces of the joint are not affected. Major symptoms are anterior ankle pain and limitation of dorsiflexion. The size of osteophytes on anterior tibia and talus can be estimated on lateral and antero-posterior radiographs. Tibiotalar osteophytes are classified in four grades according to Scranton and McDermott. The treatment of choice is arthroscopic removal of osteophytes.
