Abstract     In the critical patient, the treatment of severe pain represents a significant part of therapy. The methods applying a contonous supply of opiates ensure effective analgesia. In 30 patients aged 53.4 +- 17.5 years, with evaluated APACHE II of 17.1 +- 8.6, 2.8 +- 0.7 mg/h of morphine were administered by means of continuous intravenous infusion. Prior to this, the patients received a bolus injection of 5 mg of morphine. The duration of treatment was 11.7 +- 5.7 days. In cases of deterioration in the patient's general condition, of kidney and liver affection and multiorgan failure, the dose of morphine in the continuous intravenous infusion was lowered. On the basis of clinical signs, reliable analgesia was ascertained in all patients. No essential side effects or complications on account of morphine action were observed in any of our patients. Morphine administered in the form of continuous intravenous infusion is a good, reliable and inexpensive analgesic for the attainment of effective analgesia in critical patients.
