Abstract     Molibden je prehodni element, ki zaradi svojih fizikalno-kemioenih lastnosti omogoca katalizo eno- in dvoelektronskih redoks reakcij. Molibdatni ioni so se zato ce zelo zgodaj tekom evolucije vkljucili v nekatere metaloencime in jih zasledimo pri skoraj vseh organizmih, z izjemo nekaterih anaerobov, kjer je namesto molibdena prisoten volfram. Tudi pri sesalcih najdemo tri encime z molibdati v aktivnem mestu, med katerimi je zagotovo najbolj znana ksantin-oksidaza. Slednja katalizira pretvorbo purinov do secne kisline in oksidacijo nekaterih drugih heteroaromatov. Za zivljenje je najpomembnejsa sulfit-oksidaza, ki sodeluje v metabolizmu æveplo vsebujocih organskih spojin in preprecuje kopicenje toksicnih sulfitov v organizmu. Pri ljudeh je v strokovni literaturi opisan samo en primer pomanjkanja molibdena, zato jemanjenjegovih spojin kot prehranskih dopolnil nima racionalne osnove, prav tako pa tudi niso nedvoumno opisani primeri zastrupitev pri koncentracijah molibdenovih spojin, ki jih obicajno zauzijemo.Molybdenum is a transition metal, which may act as a catalyst for one- and twoelectron redox reactions, due to its physicochemical properties. Molybdatesbecame part of metalloenzymes early in evolution and may be still found in the majority of organisms, except some anaerobes where tungsten is present instead of molybdenum. In mammals three molybdoenzymes are found and xanthine oxidase which catalyses the oxidation of purines to uric acid and theoxidation of other heterocycles is best known. The other enzyme sulfite oxidase is essential for living as it catalyses the metabolism of sulfur containing organic compounds and prevents the accumulation of toxic sulfites in the organism. In humans there is only one case of molybdenum deficiency presented in professional literature, therefore the use of additives containing molybdenum has no rational base. Also the cases of poisoning with the ingested molybdenum compounds have not been clearly described.
