Abstract     Probiotiki so živi mikroorganizmi, ki po zaućitju ugodno vplivajo na zdravje. Kadar je gostiteljeva fiziologija prizadeta zaradi porušenega ravnotežja črevesne mikrobiote, je zelo dobrodošla zunanja probiotična podpora. Učinkovitost probiotikov je odraz njihovega delovanja po različnih medsebojno prepletenih mehanizmih in tako opravljajo veliko koristnih nalog. Predvsem zmanjšajo pogostnost okužb, prek metabolnih procesov uravnajo fiziologijo organizma ter okrepijo gostiteljev imunski sistem. Tržno dostopni probiotični izdelki so namenjeni samozdravljenju in so neomejeno dostopni uporabnikom. Zato morajo biti varni, imeti majhno tveganje za neželene učinke ter ne smejo biti niti genotoksioeni niti kancerogeni. Proizvajalci teh izdelkov morajo zagotoviti izbiro probiotikov, izdelanih po natančno določenih selekcijskih merilih varnostne, funkcionalne in tehnološke kakovosti. Samo probiotiki, ki izpolnjujejo te kriterije, zmorejo preživeti neugodne pogoje v prebavilih in se naseliti v okolju debelega črevesa, kjer lahko izrazijo svoj probiotični učinek.Probiotics, which are living microorganisms and are able to express beneficial effects on health when ingested, are presented. When host physiologyis affected due to the demolished microbiota balance, the consumption of probiotics is advised. Complex mechanisms of action lead to many beneficial probiotic effects. The most prominent are decreased frequency of infections, normalization of physiology through metabolic processes, and strengthening of host immune system as well. Probiotic products available on the market are used for self-treatment and are limitlessly available to the consumers. For this reason they should be safe, have low potential for undesired effects and must not be genotoxic or carcinogenic. Manufacturer of these products have to assure that a selection of probiotic cowers safety, functional and technological views. When probiotics suit these criteria, they can survive unfavorable conditions of gastrointestinal tract and colonize large intestine where probiotic effect can be sufficiently expressed.
