Abstract     Osteoporoza je trenutno eden največjih zdravstvenih problemov, saj zaradi podaljševanja življenjske dobe število obolelih strmo narašča. V Sloveniji je prevalenca osteoporoze pri ženskah po 50. letu 27,5 %, pri moških po 60. letu pa 14,6 %. Pri preprečevanju osteoporoznih zlomov imajo poleg kalcija in vitamina D vlogo tudi druge snovi iz prehrane. V presnovnih procesih, ki potekajo v kosteh, sodelujejo vitamini A, B, C in K, za kostno tvorbo pa je potrebna zadostna količina proteinov. Ker so v razvoj osteoporoze vpleteni tudi vnetni procesi, se učinki uživanja maščobnih kislin na zdravje kosti kažejo preko vpliva na nastajanje vnetnih citokinov. Mehanizmi delovanja vitaminov, proteinov in maščobnih kislin v kosteh so deloma pojasnjeni, vendar njihov klinični pomen pri zmanjševanju tveganja za zlome še ni dokazan, zato trenutno pri osteoporozi ni ustreznih priporočil za njihovo uživanje.Osteoporosis is currently a major health problem, as a number of affected individuals is rapidly increasing due to longer lifespan. In Slovenia, osteoporosis affects 27.5% of women after the age of 50, and 14.6% of men after the age of 60. Besides calcium and vitamin D, other nutrients play a role in the prevention of fragility fractures. Vitamins A, B, C and K are involved in bone-related metabolic processes. In bone formation process, sufficient amount of proteins is required. As osteoporosis is also due to inflammation, the fatty acids intake could influence bone health through the regulation of inflammatory cytokines synthesis. The mechanisms of action of vitamins, proteins and fatty acids in bone homeostasis have partly been elucidated. However, their clinical relevance in fracture risk reduction is still not confirmed and no recommendations about their intake are proposed.
