Abstract     Tekoči kristali predstavljajo vmesno stanje snovi med trdnim in tekočim. Liquid crystals are the state of matter existing between the liquid and the crystalline phase. The liquid crystalline state combines properties of both liquid and solid state and are divided in two main types, i.e. thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals, depending on wheather liquid crystalline state is reached either by increasing the temperature or by adding a solvent. In this article various structures of thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals are presented as well as relevant methods for investigation and characterization: polarized light and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance, atomic force microscopy, rheology and differential scanning calorimetry. Liquid crystals for pharmaceutical application and in cosmetics are also presented.
