Abstract     The experiment was performed on 9 adult male Balb/c strain mice. The animals were divided into 3 groups and exposed to different lighting conditions for 4 weeks as follows: group A- 0 hours of light, group B- 12 hours of light and group C- 24 hours of light daily. Six micro m thick step serial sections of the thyroid gland were analysed stereologically. Significant differences were found in the activation index of the thyroid gland, the nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio of the follicular cells, in their total and average volume and in the total number of nuclei and average volume of the parafollicular cells, all of which was congruent with the hypothesis of the stimulating influence of light on the microscopial structure of the thyroid gland.
