This paper present the management of pain from nursing students point of view. The aim was to research the self-assessment of nursing student%s knowledge at treatment the patient with pain. The aim was also to find the differences in knowledge between years of study. Methods Non-experimental research design was used with closed questionnaire, partly adapted from Ferrell in McCafery (2012). The survey was conducted between nursing care students at University of Maribor, Faculty of Health Sciences. Results: Results showed relatively poor students selfassessment in correlation to pain management and competency for treatment the patient with pain. We found out that there was a difference in knowledge between students from first, second and third year of study. The difference is statistical significant. Results also showed that students are familiar with nonpharmacological methods of pain treatment, but they are not using them in clinical environment when they are nursing the patient with pain. Discussion and conclusions: It is necessary to supplement the curriculum, especially in terms of using the non-pharmacological methods of pain relief and choose an active approach in teaching in the field of pain management with advanced teaching approach.
