Abstract     Authors intended to find out the causes of death that were responsible for the difference in the life expectancy at birth between sexes. Life expectancy at birth, age standardised death rate and years of potential life lost were used to examine the health situation in the whole population, standardised death ratio, median age at death and years of potential life lost were used to examine differences in causes of death between adults. Slovenia could be ranged in the last third of developed and on the top of the post socialistic countries concerning the mortality indices. All kinds of accidents, suicide and ischaemic heart disease in younger adults, malignant neoplasms, diseases of respiratory system in the elderly are responsible for the difference in life expectancy.
