Abstract     The clinical use of ali-ceramic crowns and fixed partial dentures in the posterior area is often associated with chipping or fracturing of the veneering porcelain. Less porcelain delamination can be attained by anatomical shaping of the ceramic frameworks and by using veneering porcelains with the thermal expansion coefficient adapted to framework ceramics. Frequent chipping of veneering porcelain and the development of translucent zirconium oxide ceramics have led to the introduction of monolithic zirconia restorations without veneering porcelain. The advantages of monolithic zirconia restorations over glass-ceramic and porcelain veneered zirconia restorations are greater strength, a more conservative preparation of teeth, greater precision, and faster, wholiy computer-aided manufacturing. The clinical and laboratory procedures used in the fabrication of two monolithic partial fixed dental prostheses (FPOs) made of zirconium oxide ceramic are presented in the paper. The use of a new type of material, the computer-aided design of the FP Os, and the contemporary laboratory techniques used in their fabrication are described. Zirconia being less translucent than other dental ceramics, the indications for the use of monolithic zirconia restorations are currently limited mainly to the posterior area.
