Abstract     Hoarseness is a frequent disorder in pupils and students. Its most common causes are voice abuse and misuse. The disorder can also be provoked by variety of unfavourable somatic factors. In the article, the most common disorders in different age groups of young people (up to 10 years, 10 to 18 years, students) are described, these being functional dysphonia, vocal cord nodules and laryngitis, and some most common unfavourable somatic factors that differ by age are discussed. Authors are convinced that the school doctors' important task is adequate counselling and gradual removal of all disorder-causing influences. Besides, only correct phonation technique learned in school period allows young people to perform speaking professions as well.
