Abstract     The opinion of smoking as the most important preventable cause of morbidity and mortality is now prevailing. The age at which young people begin to smoke is, however, progressively lower. Smoking among youth is becoming a significant public-health problem. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of the medical education on the prevalence of smoking among secondary school pupils in Murska Sobora. The results of the comparative study showed 31.9 percent of smokers among 926 secondary school pupils in the year 1980 and 32.6 percent smokers among 788 pupils in 1990. Though the difference is statistically not significant, the mere fact that the number of smokers did not increase is a stimulating result. Smokers typically come from surroundings where parents and friends smoke as well. There is no doubt that medical education is an important factor in smoking prevention, but it is not decisive for the decreasing number of young smokers. The authors believe the reduction of smoking among youth could only be achieved by non-smoking social standards along with an intensive medical education.
