Abstract     The available epidemiological data on goitre and iodine supplementation were presented. Disorders induced by iodine deficiency affect about 800 million people and even in Europe the problem has been greatly underestimated. However surveys carried out in last 15 years clearly demonstrated the persistence of severely affected areas. The iodine prophylaxis is necessary in most countries, but the mode is dependent on epidemiological and socio-economical situation. The different possibilities of iodine prophylaxis are discussed. The situation in Slovenia, where iodination of salt was introduced in the year 1953 is similar as in some other countries in Central Europe. The data presented clearly suggest, that Slovenia is a moderate endemic region and that the daily intake of salt should be elevated.
