Abstract     The authors studied the most frequent causes of mortality and hospitalisation in children and adolescents in Slovenia, while also trying to find possible differences in specific mortality and causes of death between pupils and students, and the rest of the population of the same age. The article presents the accident-related and the most frequent illnesses-related mortality and hospitalisation rates in two age groups of children and adolescents during a 7 year period. Mortality and causes of death were analysed and compared between pupils and students, and the rest of population of the same age. Mortality of pupils and students in the age group from 15 to 26 years is lower than in their peers. The latter are more frequently victims of traffic accidents, especially as motor vehicle drivers. The most frequent cause of hospitalisation in children from 7 to 14 years are respiratory diseases, followed by injuries and gastrointestinal diseases. In adolescents from 15 to 19 years injuries are in the first place, followed by gastrointestinal and genitourinary diseases. Injuries are the most frequent cause of hospitalisation and death in children and adolescents. The programmes for their prevention should therefore, represent a priority in the activities of the public health service.
