Abstract     Schoolchildren and adolescents seem to be very occupied with school and learning. Their leisure time is dictated by inappropriate curriculum, timetables and school calendar, uncoordinated with needs and characteristics of growing-up period. Schoolchildren work and live in an environment which does not enable them to use their leisure time for relaxation and health benefits. Consequences are tiredness, psychosomatic disorders, morbidity, developmental disturbances and disabilities. In order to study the situation in Sežana, every fifth pupil was anonymously inquired. Data were classified according to the age of the pupils in percentage (from 1st to 4th class and from 5th to 8th class of primary school, and high school pupils). Drug abuse at the high school has been followed for the last 4 years; inquiry is anonymous, with all pupils taking part. The results are confirming the above mentioned statements. Pupils neither sleep nor exercise enough, have unregular nutrition, watch TV excessively and are tired. In their own opinion their vacations are too short and not enough attention is paid to young people. Indicators of increasing alcohol and drug dependence among high school pupils are also a warning sign.
