Abstract     The article presents the results of the inquiry about television watching among young people in Celje. 218 pupils from 5th to 7th class were inquired. Families of all participants have a TV set, 45 percent receive satellite programmes and 63 percent have a video recorder. On average pupils watch TV 2 hours and 26 minutes daily, 886 hours a year, of ten even in the late night hours, especially on weekends. The most popular are films, sport and music programmes. One third of children watch TV alone, one third together with peers and one third with elders. Mostly they discuss broadcasts with their friends and only in 20 percent with parents. Television does not displace other leisure time activities. Children still attend various interest group meetings, play music and engage in sport activities, they read and listen to the radio. For them, TV is a window to the world of reality and fantasy, refuge in the moments of disappointment or pastime in emptiness. TV extends their comprehension and subversively dictates behavioural patterns. It exerts an influence on the child's development, but its positive and negative characteristics should be carefully considered so we can choose for the child's benefit.
