Abstract     In the school year 1991/92 a study on cigarette smoking was carried out among high school pupils in Novo mesto, analysing also the influence of parents and teachers on this habit. Among 309 inquired pupils 25.6 percent were smokers (37 percent males, 20 percent females). About 15 percent of pupils began to smoke before the age of 15. Smoking among pupils at the Vocational secondary school was found to be twice as frequent as among pupils at the High school (Gymnasium). Among males there were three times as many smokers as among females. Parental smoking was significantly related to smoking among pupils (52 percent of smokers had smoking father, 40 percent smoking mother). Among parents fathers were smoking in 37 percent and mothers in 27 percent. Average school grade in smoking pupils was found to be statistically significantly lower than in nonsmokers. Inquiry results also show teachers to be quite uninterested in elimination of smoking among pupils.
