Abstract     Hearing of 61 pupils at Secondary school for pedagogics in Ljubljana was tested. 36 pupils were occasionally exposed to very loud music in discos, and 25 pupils not visiting discos and not using personal stereo systems were selected as a control group. Equivalent music level, measured in a disco visited by the participants of the first group, was 93.6 dB (A). Hearing was impaired in 21 pupils (34.42 percent)-in 10 from the experimental and in 11 from the control group. The results do not confirm the theory about hearing impairment and exposure to loud music in discos. This finding might have several reasons. The experimental group did not exceed the critical time limit (5.3 hours) of exposition to the noise level 93.6 dB (A). Besides, very loud but pleasant sounds seem to be less harmful than undesirable noise of the same level. Possible causes for the hearing impairment in studied groups are viral inections in childhood, otitis media, viral meningitis and intense noises of short duration-especially blasts crackers.
