Abstract     Dr. Lojz Kraigher is the most prominent writer among Slovene physicians. He is also the only physician-writer whose works have been published in the series "The Complete Works of Slovene Writers and Poets". The themes in his literary opus vary from national to social problems, the central theme, however, is the erotic, present directly or indirectly, in all of his works. His prose excels in fluency, rich diagues, power of confession, and perfect presentation of human characters. He won recognition by his drama "Školjka" (The Shell) and his novel "Kontrolor Škrobar" (The Controller škrobar). As a young boy he was a friend of Cankar and in memory of their friendship he wrote a vast monograph in two parts. Here, he interpreted Cankar's works and added his own recollections. The experience of partisan life and concentration camp in Dachau gave him some additional inspiration. His writing is full of his own experiences, so it is often considered autobiographic. Owing to his strong and firm personality, Kraigher had a great impact on cultural and political life in Slovenia. He was the initiator and co-founder of the University and Medical Faculty in Ljubljana.
