Abstract     This article describes the life and work of Dr. Ivan Dežman (Rijeka 1841 - Zagreb 1873). As a doctor he excelled in public health service and education, which is obvious from his numerous popular and technical articles. As prisoners' doctor he paved the way to the literature of medical jurisprudence and as a public worker he deserves special credits for founding the National University and Medical Faculty in Zagreb. His literary work encompasses numerous patriotic poems, narrative epic poems, dramas, a libretto... He was a typical representative of the Croatiam pre-realism. His most important contribution to medical literature is his work "Rečnik lečničkog nazivlja" (The Dictionary of medical terminology) (1868), which represent the first systematic approach to medical terminology, based on the actual linguistic and medical practice. He gives explanation for 3247 words, he collected among old lexicographers and other people, he also gives suggestions for some terms that have not existed in the Croatian language at his time. Todaj, 120 years after his death, the work of Dr. Ivan Dežman is still refreshing and represents a distinct contribution to the contemporary Croatian literature.
