Abstract     Stents are mechanical devices placed within the lumen of tubular structures to maintain patency by providing mural support. Although stents differ in construction, they all possess one of three basic mechanisms of action: thermal memory, spring action, or plastic deformation. Percutaneous placement of metal stents has proved successful in obtaining satisfactory lumens in managing intimal flaps after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) that threaten to compromise the initial patency. Stents can be very efficient also in treatment of the large vein, tracheobronchial, and biliary obstruction. The clinical applicability of stents will further increase as new designs and modifications are developed and refined.
