Abstract     Odontogenic keratocysts occupy an important place among lesions of the jaws. They are characterized by aggressive growth and a tendency to recur. On radiographs they manifest themselves as radiolucencies in the mandible. Their classification among bening neoplasms has been proposed by researchers. These lesions may occur as part of the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, also known as the Gorlin-Goltz syndrome. Therefore all patients presenting with an odontogenic keratocyst must be followed by frequent examinations. If a new cystic radiolucency becomes apparent in the patient's jaw, a thorough evaluation is mandatory. It is widely accepted that every patient with two or more odontogenic keratocysts (excluding recurrent lesions) exhibits some form of the Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.
