Abstract     Background: Tinnitus is highly prevalent among patients with bilateral sen - sorineural hearing loss. These patients benefit from cochlear implants (CI) not only regarding their auditory rehabilitation, but also regarding tinnitus, becuse electrostimulation of the cochlea has been shown to reduce tinnitus. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of cochlear implantation on tinnitus suppression among our patients. Methods: Our retrospective study was conducted on 68 patients who had undergone cochlear implantation at the Clinic of Otorhino - laryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery in Ljubljana between 2005 and 2015; patients younger than 10 years were excluded. We performed statistical analysis on data gathered from their medical records considering their age, gender, history of hearing loss, tinnitus complaints before and after cochlear implantation and results of postoperative pure tone audiometry with CI. Results: The mean age at the time of cochlear implantation was 40 years and the mean duration of hearing loss was 18 months. The prevalence of tinnitus before the implantation was 48 %. It was eliminated in 84 % of patients who complained of tinnitus before the surgery. This improvement was statistically significant (p<0.001). Tinnitus was more prevalent among older patients who complained of it prior to the surgery. The difference was statistically significant after we divided the patients into two groups - those younger and older than either 40 years (p<0.01), 50 years (p<0,05) or 55 years (p<0.05) of age. We did not find any correlation between age and hearing threshold with CI or between duration of hearing loss and hearing threshold with CI. Conclusions: Tinnitus was a common accompanying symptom of severe hear - ing loss or deafness among our candidates for CI. We have concluded that the patients not only achieved hearing threshold with an average of 30 dB with CI, but also benefited from the implantation regarding tinnitus suppression.
