Abstract     The authors have evaluated the effects of an oral health education programme for pregnant women on the oral health status of the children. The study covered 221 expectant mothers who attendend a course in oral health offered by the mothercraft clinic. All the women underwent a dental examination, and their knowledge of oral health was tested at the beginning and on completion of the course. The children born to these women had dental examinations performed at 1.5, 2 and 3 years of age. Their dental status was compared with that of a control group of children whose mothers did not attend the oral health education course during pregnancy. The results showed that the oral health status of the women participating in the study was correlated with the level of their formal education and knowledge of oral health. The children born to these women had lower levels of dental plaque and lower caries rates than the control group of children. The study sugests that providing oral health education to women during pregnancy is an effective measure for early prevention of dental caries in children.
