Abstract     While today's magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technology provides clinically useful images of soft dental tissues including dental pulp and periodontium, solid tissues with a low free water content in their microstructure, such as dentine, enamel and cortical bone, cannot be imaged for the present. In this study, performed in vitro on human teeth, we evaluated the applicability of MR microscopy as an adjunct to routine dental radiographs, which often fail to supply adequate diagnostic information. With MR microimaging we were able to demonstrate the size and shape of the pulp chamber, the morphology and number of root canals and incipient carious lesions. The results sugest that with further development of the techology, MR microscopy is likely to become a valuable diagnostic tool in dentistry.
