Abstract     The study was carried out on 277 histological sections prepared from extracted, fixed and demineralised dog teeth. In teeth with little residual dentine present at the cavity base, a greater amount of predentine was formed beneath the cavity than on the opposite side of the pulp chamber. The predentine layer was thicker 5mm apically from the cavity than in the opposite wall of the root canal. Inlammation of the dental pulp observed in lower left first molars caused a reduced formation of predentine. Sections of a lower left first molar revealed amorphous spherical formations resembling amyloid bodies around the vessels in the coronal part of the dental pulp, which are believed to play a positive role in the local defense system.
