Abstract		Ten patients with inflammatory periodontal disease were studied. The serum concentration of two protease inhibitors, alpha2-macroglobulin and alpha1-antitrypsin, were measured before and two week after scaling and root planing. Probing depth and gingival index were assessed at the same time. Significant decreases in gingival inflammation and probing depth, as well as a significant decrease in the levels of both protease inhibitors were observed two weeks after the therapy. The results confirm the hypothesis that scaling and root planing can lead to substantial improvement of periodontal inflammation. The reduced protease inhibitor levels suggest that the therapy may contribute to a more balanced systemic immune response.
