Abstract     The aim of this study was to determine whether the accuracy of MR imaging in the diagnosis of gingival inflammation can be improved with the use of MR spectroscopy. Samples of normal and inflamed gingival tissue obtained from 11 dog mandibles were examined by MR imaging. The proton spin lattice relaxation times T1 and T2 were measured with a pulsed MR Fourier-transform spectrometer (gamma - 100 MHz). After the MR studies, the gingival tissue samples were submitted to histological analysis by light microscopy. The highest T1 and T2 values were measured in samples with histological evidence of acute gingival inflammation, while the lowest values were found in normal gingival tissue. The correlation between the severity of inflammation and prolongation of the relaxation times can be used for the optimization of optical contrast in MR imaging. We conclude that MR spectroscopy is a useful adjunct to MR imaging in the diagnosis of gingival inflammation.
