Abstract     An abnormal labial frenulum is a frequent cause of periodontal problems in all age groups. We measured the degree of periodontal tissue destruction on the mesial and distal surfaces of 80 central maxillary incisors with a high marginal insertion of the labial frenulum. Significantly greater probing depths (p less th. 0,01) and appreciably more advanced periodntal tissues destruction were observed on the mesial surfaces adjacent to the marginally inserted frenulum, as compared to the distal surfaces of the same teeth. A correlation in probing depth was established between left mesial and left distal surfaces, as well as between right distal and left distal surfaces of the teeth. These findings are not accidental; they indicate asymmetrical action of the frenulum on the interdental papilla. Frenal abnormalities should be given more attention by the dentist since timely diagnosis can prevent the development or arrest the progression of periodontal disease.
